SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- The chief technology officer (CTO) of South Korean mobile carrier LG Uplus Corp. said Tuesday South Korea and Japan could generate synergies in voice artificial intelligence (AI) services ahead of the commercialization of sixth-generation (6G) networks.
Lee Sang-yup made the remarks at a forum hosted by Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, in Seoul, when asked about potential areas of technological cooperation between the two countries.
Lee said the two countries have considerable room to collaborate in the AI era, particularly in voice AI, noting that each country has its own linguistic nuances.
"I believe the voice AI field offers opportunities for synergy between the two countries," he said.
6G networks are expected to be AI-native, with built-in agentic voice and intelligent calling services that could shift mobile communications away from traditional app-based interactions toward natural, context-aware voice interfaces and personal AI assistants.
Lee said next-generation AI services would be orchestrated through a combination of cloud-based, on-device and platform AI.
"We are currently building and testing hybrid AI infrastructure," he said.
The Yonhap Future Economic Forum, held under the theme "A Fragmenting Global Economy: Connecting South Korea and Japan Through One Market," brought together around 500 participants from the two countries, including political, business and academic leaders.
