New Chinese ambassador to New Zealand Zhao Xing has arrived in the country after the departure of his predecessor, Wang Xiaolong, earlier this month.
The Chinese Embassy said Zhao presented a copy of his letter of credence to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Thursday.
A former ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao said he was honoured to serve as Chinese ambassador to New Zealand.
"Even mountains and oceans cannot sever the bonds of shared aspirations," Zhao said, quoting an ancient Chinese proverb in a messaged published on the Chinese Embassy's website.
"Albeit separated by the vast Pacific Ocean from New Zealand, the Cook Islands and Niue, China enjoys close and friendly relations with the three countries, with respective Comprehensive Strategic Partnerships thriving through joint efforts."
Facing a changing international landscape, China-New Zealand relations had maintained a steady momentum of growth, with new progress continually achieved in practical cooperation across various fields, he said.
"China stands ready to work with New Zealand to carry forward our traditional friendship and expand mutually beneficial cooperation."
In his dual role as ambassador to the Cooks Islands and Niue, Zhao also said China would help both Pacific Island nations address climate change and economic development, as well as support the stability, development and prosperity of the region and the world.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been approached for comment.
