The Hyderabad Traffic Police have registered six criminal cases in a week against motorists using fake, tampered or unauthorised vehicle registration number plates, as part of an intensified enforcement drive following a surge in complaints.

Multiple vehicles were identified and seized during the operation. The cases were registered at Banjara Hills and Amberpet Police Stations. Besides, the cases were also registered at Hanamkonda Police station in Warangal Commissionerate, Kondapur police station in Sangareddy district and Choutuppal Police Station in Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri district.

The traffic police said only government-approved High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are legally permitted. Custom alterations, missing digits and temporary stickers on registration plates are prohibited.

Vehicles with manipulated registration plates are often used to conceal their identities and evade traffic enforcement, besides violating motor vehicle regulations, the police said.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police warned that the use of fake or altered registration plates would invite criminal prosecution and immediate seizure of the vehicle.

The department appealed to vehicle owners to comply with prescribed number plate norms and traffic regulations. It said enforcement drives would continue across the city as part of efforts to improve road safety and prevent crime.
