HBO has picked up a second season of Sharon Horgan‘s comedy series Youth.
The renewal comes a day after the show’s season finale, which saw Horgan’s character, Alex, at a crossroads both personally and professionally. There’s no word yet on when a second season might arrive.
“I’m so happy to get another opportunity to live out my emotional and biological crises on HBO,” Horgan said in a statement. “I can’t think of a better platform to air my UTI problems on. The response to Youth has been beyond what I could have hoped for. I’m so grateful for the response and the chance to work with this incredible cast and creative team once more.”
Youth follows Horgan’s Alex, a 50-year-old divorcee, as she tries to get her love life back on track, deals with a teenage son (Aran Murphy) having trouble adjusting to young adulthood and attempts to keep her career moving forward.
“In a way that only she can, Sharon has created a show that makes us howl with laughter and with tears — often in the same moment,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp HBO Programming and head of comedy series for HBO and HBO Max. “Each performance in Youth is more delightful than the next. Along with our partners at Merman, we are so thrilled to have this brilliant ensemble back for another season.”
The series also stars Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte and Robbie Gee. Horgan created Youth and writes and executive produces in addition to starring. Faye Dorn of Horgan’s Merman company, Jim Kleverweis, and Dawn Shadforth also exec produce. Shadforth directed four of the season’s eight episodes, while Jim O’Hanlon helmed the other four.
