KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 — Police have tightened security at the entrance to Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s residence in Jalan Langgak Duta here this morning, amid speculation that the former prime minister may return to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
Berita Harian reported that Najib may be permitted to return home after settling the required payment.
Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Bakri Abdul Salam and his deputy were spotted arriving at the housing area at 10.45am, shortly after a team of officers and personnel from the district police headquarters turned up at 10.30am.
Police officers at the scene directed media personnel to keep their distance from the house, permitting coverage only from the junction leading into the residential area.
“Yes, we are making preparations for control and surveillance around the entrance to Datuk Seri Najib’s residence starting this morning,” Anuar Bakri told reporters.
“So far, we have not received any exact information, but we are preparing for any possibility.”
Close to 30 police personnel and several vehicles are currently on standby to monitor the area.
Anuar Bakri said officers had laid police tape to keep unauthorised individuals away from Najib’s home.
Checks by reporters found patrol cars and mobile vans deployed at the scene, along with two tents set up for duty and control purposes.
Information received indicates that Najib is expected back at his residence after Friday prayers this afternoon.
The presence of almost all senior Sentul district police officers at the location further suggests that Najib may be sent home today.
Najib, 73, has been at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, after the Federal Court upheld his conviction over the misappropriation of RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd.
His original sentence was 12 years’ jail and a RM210 million fine, which the Federal Territories Pardons Board reduced in January 2024 to six years and RM50 million.
Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon on September 18, permitting him to serve the rest of his term under house arrest until August 23, 2028, provided the fine and other conditions are met.
