A North Korea-linked hacker group was likely behind a cyberattack against GMO Internet Group, media reports said Monday ahead of CEO Masatoshi Kumagai’s highly anticipated news conference — the company’s first public briefing since it became embroiled in a growing scandal over the massive data breach.

GMO has been in the hot seat since Oct. 21, when it disclosed that its Onamae.com desktop cloud service had been breached, affecting more than 26,000 servers — including accounts used for foreign exchange (FX) trading.

Five IP addresses used to access a now-shuttered website claiming responsibility for the attack immediately after matched those previously used by a North Korean hacking group, Kyodo News, working with cybersecurity experts, reported.
