The Embassy of Mexico in Egypt inaugurated a new mural titled “When the Moon Sighs” at Al Horreya Garden in Cairo on 29 October 2026, bringing together Mexican and Egyptian artists in a celebration of cultural exchange and friendship.
Héctor Ortega, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico, attended the unveiling alongside Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber, members of the diplomatic corps, students and members of the Mexican community.
Ortega thanked the governor and Cairo Governorate for their support, noting that their cooperation had enabled the embassy to showcase Mexican culture in Cairo’s public spaces through photography exhibitions in downtown Cairo and the metro, as well as the newly unveiled mural.
He highlighted the importance of public spaces as venues for everyday interaction, expressing the embassy’s hope that passersby would discover Mexico and develop an interest in learning more about its culture.
He also described muralism as one of Mexico’s most important traditional art forms, reflecting the country’s history and ideas.
The mural was created by Mexican artist Uriel Fernando Barragán Cruz, known as “Bouler”, from Oaxaca, in collaboration with young Egyptian artists, students from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Capital University and members of the Mexican community. The project was supervised by artist Mafalda Budib.
Bouler explained that the mural represents the meeting of Egyptian and Mexican cultures, which, despite their geographical distance, share the same sky.
He said two birds joined by a single heart symbolise how different roots can bring people together through shared emotions.
He added that the collective painting process reflects the power of teamwork and human connection.
The mural will remain at Al Horreya Garden, giving visitors an opportunity to appreciate the artwork and learn more about Mexican culture.
