KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has reportedly opened an investigation into a Facebook post suspected of containing highly offensive remarks against the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

According to Bernama, MCMC said in a statement today that the post was also suspected of touching on sensitivities involving race, religion and royalty (3R).

The commission said it had recorded a statement from the individual involved at the Sri Petaling police station to assist investigations.

A mobile phone and a SIM card were also seized as part of the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both, upon conviction.

MCMC said it viewed seriously the spread of online content suspected of containing false information or insults against the royal institution, particularly material that could undermine social harmony.

The commission also reminded the public to use social media responsibly and refrain from creating or sharing content that violates Malaysian laws.
