Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky will receive this year Director’s Award at the 34th ToruńCamerimage international film festival.
The director of Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler, Black Swan and The Whale will be honored by the Polish film festival, which runs from Nov. 7-14, 2026, celebrating the art of cinematography.
Announcing Aronofsky’s honor, Camerimage praised the director for work that “demonstrates the immense power of cinema when form becomes an integral part of the story being told.” Aronofsky’s “bold directorial choices, an intense visual language and a close interplay between image and sound” the festival said, “draws audiences into the worlds of his characters, allowing them to experience their struggles almost firsthand.”
Aronofsky made a splash with his low-budget black-and-white debut Pi (1998), the story of a mathematician and his increasingly obsessive search for order in the world, which won the directing award at Sundance and an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. It was the director’s first collaboration with his cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who would go on to lens Aronofsky’s most acclaimed work, including Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan and The Whale, as well as the opulent epic The Fountain (2006), a commercial flop at the time which has been critically reassessed and is now considered by many to be a modern-day masterpiece. His latest feature, Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler, was released last year.
Throughout his career, Aronofsky has continued to push the boundaries of mainstream cinema, and the director has been one of the rare big Hollywood names to publicly embrace the potential of AI in movie making. His AI production studio Primordial Soup, launched last year and drawing on the tech of Google DeepMind, delivered the YouTube shortform series On This Day… 1776, which dramatizing the scenes from some of the Revolutionary War period’s most pivotal moments. The series was trashed by critics, but Aronofsky continues to push forward with the venture, this summer filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a $15 million equity raise.
