Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has a big Supreme Court problem. Its name is Alexandre de Moraes.
The powerful justice, once celebrated for protecting Brazilian democracy from Jair Bolsonaro’s attempts to undermine it, has become a liability for the reelected president just as he prepares for a new term promising to heal the country’s deep divisions.
Barely hours after Lula defeated Bolsonaro’s son Flavio in Sunday’s presidential runoff, Moraes ordered the losing candidate to surrender his passports, citing concerns that he might flee the country as multiple criminal investigations close in on him.
