Boy George stood with the Jews when so many others turned away - opinion

Dear Boy George,

I am Uri Geller. There are things I can do with my extraordinary abilities: read minds, bend metal, and predict events. There are also things I cannot do, such as communicate with the dead.

But there is something I believe with every fiber of my being: the 378 people murdered at the Nova music festival will be thanking you.

Thanking you for being one of the loudest, bravest, and most unwavering voices keeping their memory alive. And when you perform here in Israel, I believe their spirits will be there with you, dancing once again.

Israelis and Jews around the world suffered not once but twice. First, on October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists slaughtered some 1,200 people in an orgy of murder, rape, and unimaginable savagery.

Second, in the days, months, and now years that followed, so much of the world turned its back on us.

The United Nations turned its back. Human rights organisations turned their backs. Celebrities who never hesitate to champion a cause suddenly found themselves unable to speak up for us.

We were the victims. Yet instead of compassion, we encountered condemnation. Instead of solidarity, silence.

We felt abandoned, betrayed, and alone.

Then, out of the darkness, stepped Boy George.

You might as well have arrived on horseback, leading a cavalry charge.

You brought something we needed so badly: a famous voice prepared to speak up for the Jewish people, without hesitation or apology.

And what a voice!

It wasn't just the immense emotional power of your music. It was the power of your words, the strength of your convictions and, above all, the courage to stand by them.

And when the criticism came, you stayed the course.

I know something about fame, celebrity, and the cruelty of public opinion.

I have experienced the extraordinary highs of being adored and the crushing lows of being attacked. When you live in the public eye, there are few feelings more exhilarating than the love of an audience. And few more devastating than watching that affection turn to hostility.

You know this better than most.

You have spent more than four decades building an extraordinary career, winning the hearts of millions and becoming one of the most recognisable figures in popular music.

You had so much to lose by taking a stand you knew could be unpopular with some of your fans and fellow artists.

And yet you spoke out anyway. To my mind, that is what courage looks like.

To me, and to countless Jews around the world, you are more than a pop icon. You are a beacon of light in a very dark time.

You are a hero.

I hope that while you are in Israel, you will find time to visit my museum in Old Jaffa. It is filled with extraordinary memorabilia from some of the greatest rock stars I have had the privilege of knowing, from David Bowie to John Lennon to Elton John.

I vividly recall my son Daniel dancing to your song "Karma Chameleon" in his pram when he was two years old.

Now there is a space waiting for you in my museum, too. And I would be honoured to add you to that remarkable company.

But whatever happens, please know this: your kindness, your courage and your solidarity have meant more to us than words can adequately express.

And to borrow from your powerful song:

We are not confused. You stand with the Jews. And we love you more than ever.
