Police say charges could be laid against a young person, after a fire was lit at a youth justice facility in South Auckland today.

Oranga Tamariki staff alerted emergency services at around 12 pm on Saturday after a small fire was detected at Korowai Manaaki in Manurewa.

Deputy chief executive of Youth Justice Services Dean Winter says medics checked one rangatahi and another person as a precaution and neither was seriously injured.

He says the fire caused minimal damage and was quickly extinguished.

A rangatahi is now in police custody.

An investigation is underway and Oranga Tamariki staff are reviewing the incident.
