A woman's body has been found in a house during police enquiries into a crash involving a car and a train in the Bay of Plenty this morning.
One person is in a critical condition after the crash at a private level crossing at an address on Te Puke Highway just after 9am today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Lou Curragh said a homicide investigation was now underway after police then found the woman's body at a Kawerau address.
Curragh said the death was being treated as suspicious, as police were working to determine the exact circumstances.
Police are now examining the scene and scene guards are in place.
The sole occupant of the vehicle hit by the train was airlifted to Waikato Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
