Police are asking for help identifying a man whose body was found in the water off an Auckland beach late this afternoon.

Police said emergency services were called to the northern end of Saint Leonards Beach on the North Shore about 5:45pm today after reports that a man's body had been seen in the water.

A member of the public pulled him from the water and CPR was attempted, but the man was pronounced dead on the beach.

Police said he appeared to be of Asian descent, aged 40-50 - possibly in his early 60s.

He is of medium build, has a bald head that may be shaven and no facial hair. He has no obvious marks, scars or tattoos.

The man was not wearing any shoes, but was clad in blue jeans with a bike tyre inner-tube as a belt. He also wore a dark polo shirt with thin light-coloured horizontal stripes, and a pair of blue and green swimming goggles

Police said the first priority is to identify the man before determining how he died, and anybody who may have information has been urged to contact police on 105.
