A 45-year-old man has been arrested following a series of burglaries targeting fire sprinkler connections at commercial buildings across Auckland.

Counties Manukau West Area Commander Inspector Dave Christoffersen said at least nine reports have been made of metal couplings being stolen from fire sprinkler inlets.

"So far this offending is localised to the Counties Manukau West and Auckland East area, however police are working to establish if this offending is occurring in other communities."

Acting Detective Sergeant Simon Kirby said police recovered several items from the man's property, including metal couplings allegedly stolen from these areas.

The couplings allow firefighters to boost the water supply to sprinkler systems during a fire. If they are stolen or damaged, it can limit firefighters' ability to control a fire and carry out rescues.

Police are now advising building owners to check areas around important service access points and make sure they are properly secured.

Christoffersen said the burglaries mostly happened after business hours and on weekends.

"Police intelligence suggests offending is likely to occur between 7pm and 5am," he said.

Police and the Fire Protection Association New Zealand said the thefts could put the public and firefighters at risk.

The man has been charged with two counts of burglary and is due to appear in the Manukau District Court.
