Eight people have been arrested and a loaded firearm has been seized after an incident at Hutt Hospital today.

Police were called to High Street about 10.20am after reports a person had been seen with a firearm.

Hutt Valley Area Commander Inspector Wade Jennings said the hospital went into lockdown for a short period of time.

"The lockdown was lifted shortly after those allegedly involved were located and apprehended outside the hospital."

Jennings said police searched several vehicles and found a number of weapons, including a loaded firearm.

"This is an isolated event, and police are not seeking anybody else in relation to it," said Jennings.

"There is also no threat to public safety following this incident."

Jennings said several firearms-related charges will be laid.

Meanwhile, another lockdown in the area involving a school has now been lifted.

Wainuiomata High School went into lockdown about 12.30pm for about an hour.

Police remained at the scene, after being called to the school following a report of a person coming onto the campus and damaging a window on a building.

The school announced on Facebook that the lockdown had ended and classes would continue as usual this afternoon.

It said everyone was safe and parents could come pick up their children early if they wished.
