A child who was assaulted at a central Auckland park over the weekend is in a stable condition.
The assault happened at Myers Park, near Queen Street, at about 4.45pm on Sunday.
On Tuesday, police said the child, who was taken to Starship Hospital with critical injuries after the attack, was doing well and remained in a stable condition.
Police confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been charged with attempted murder and was in custody.
He had been taken to hospital in serious condition following the attack as a result of self-inflicted injuries.
Defence lawyer Jason Yang said the man would not be appearing in court on Tuesday, as planned, because he was still in hospital.
He said his client, who has name suppression, has had his first appearance rescheduled to 9 November.
Police said the child and the adult did not know each other.
