The Nigeria Democratic Congress has criticised President Bola Tinubu for blaming opposition figures for the hunger and poverty in the country, accusing his administration of shirking responsibility for the economic hardship.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Moses Cleopas, in an interview with SATURDAY PUNCH, said the President and the ruling All Progressives Congress should take responsibility for the country’s economic situation rather than blame their political opponents.

Cleopas was reacting to Tinubu’s remarks blaming past leaders, particularly opposition figures, for the hunger and poverty confronting Nigerians.

He said it was irresponsible for a government that campaigned for power and secured the mandate to govern to blame its critics for its inability to provide relief to citizens.

“It is because of their [ruling APC government] irresponsibility. How will a father wake up one morning to say the reason I cannot feed my children was because of my critics?” he said.

“They are the people in government because they asked to be given the power. They campaigned and begged to be in power even against the people’s wish.

“Now that they have the power, why are they blaming others for it?” Cleopas asked.

Tinubu had spoken last Saturday at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna, where he blamed past leaders, particularly opposition figures, for the country’s hunger and poverty while promising Nigerians prosperity if re-elected in 2027.

The President said his administration was working to address the economic challenges facing Nigerians and highlighted the regular payment of salaries. He also praised APC governors for their performance and development efforts in their respective states.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to vote for him and other APC candidates in the January 16, 2027, elections, calling for the party to win governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and state assembly seats.

Cleopas’s remarks add to the opposition’s criticism of the Tinubu administration’s handling of the economy as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
