The Edo State Government has commenced the construction of a two-storey general hospital in Iguobazuwa, headquarters of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, to improve access to healthcare services in the state.

The hospital is expected to provide secondary healthcare services to residents of Ovia Federal Constituency and neighbouring communities.

The Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, performed the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Idahosa, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Friday Aghedo, described the project as a strategic investment in the health and well-being of residents.

He said the facility would bring quality medical services closer to the people and reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to access treatment.

According to him, the hospital, which will be located in the heart of Iguobazuwa, is expected to improve access to medical care, particularly during emergencies.

He added that it was designed to meet the secondary healthcare needs of the constituency and serve as a referral centre for surrounding communities.

“The hospital would be equipped with essential facilities, including a pharmacy, mortuary, and staff quarters, to support effective and round-the-clock healthcare delivery,” he said.

Idahosa commended Okpebholo for initiating the project, describing it as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life of Edo residents.

He said the facility would benefit not only the present population but also future generations.

The Chairman of Ovia South-West Local Government Area, Anthony Osarobo, also praised the governor for the initiative, describing it as a timely response to healthcare challenges in the area.

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Riverine Communities, Robert Okubo; member representing Ovia South-West Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly, Sunday Aghedo; and Commissioner for Oil and Gas Resources, Prof. Ikponmwonsa Omorodion, also commended the project.

They described the hospital as an important investment in healthcare delivery, particularly for indigenous and riverine communities.

The statement said the project was part of the healthcare component of the Okpebholo administration’s SHINE Agenda, which aims to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare across the state.

The project engineer later conducted Idahosa and other government officials around the site, explaining the proposed structure and facilities.

When completed and operational, the Iguobazuwa General Hospital is expected to strengthen secondary healthcare delivery and improve access to medical services across Ovia Federal Constituency and neighbouring communities.
