The City Boy Movement has shifted its attention to polling-unit mobilisation in Lagos West 1, tasking its newly inaugurated ward executives with building voter databases and securing a presence in every polling unit.
The assignment emerged as the central message at the inauguration of ward executives for the Lagos West 1 Senatorial District in Ikeja on Thursday, where leaders of the All Progressives Congress-backed movement declared the completion of its grassroots structure across Lagos State.
The movement’s Deputy Director-General in Lagos, Temitope Adedeji, said the new executives must move beyond political gatherings and establish an operational network capable of reaching voters at the grassroots.
“We must have the data for our wards and polling units. We must have a representative in each polling unit. Beyond the dancing, our responsibility is to go to our ward levels and mobilise the polling units,” Adedeji said.
The lawmaker representing Ifako/Ijaiye Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly described Lagos West 1 as a key electoral base for President Bola Tinubu, whose re-election the movement is campaigning for.
The inauguration at Marcelina’s Place, Ikeja, brought together council chairmen, lawmakers and political stakeholders from the district’s 18 local governments and local council development areas.
The Director-General of the movement in Lagos and Chairman of Kosofe Local Government, Moyosore Ogunlewe, said the ward-level inauguration completed the organisation’s structure from the state to the grassroots.
He told the executives that their responsibility included countering misinformation, mobilising young people to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and taking the President’s message to markets and community meetings.
“Our job is to take the message to the grassroots and to counter fake news and misinformation,” Ogunlewe said.
He added, “Be present at our meetings and markets. Mobilise our youths to get their PVCs. We must deliver all our candidates.”
The movement’s mobilisation strategy also rests on persuading voters about the Tinubu administration’s record.
The Coordinator for Lagos West 1 and Chairman of Onigbongbo LCDA, Moyosore Adebanjo, cited the absence of fuel queues and strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities as evidence of improvements under the President.
“People have forgotten how they used to queue at fuel stations during festivities,” Adebanjo said.
He also linked the performance of local councils to the President’s local government reforms, arguing that greater financial capacity had enabled councils to undertake road construction and provide empowerment programmes.
“Everything we are doing as council chairmen is due to what President Bola Tinubu has done for local governments. There is no way a local government would not construct five roads in a year and provide empowerment for the people,” he said.
The movement’s Legal Adviser in Lagos, Ladi Ajomale, urged the new executives to familiarise themselves with government projects and communicate them to residents.
He cited the Third Mainland Bridge, the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the proposed Badagry-Sokoto Road among the infrastructure projects they should publicise.
Chairman of Ejigbo LCDA, Taoheed Adebayo Taiwo, said the movement had also developed an application to communicate the administration’s activities, describing its role as extending beyond conventional political mobilisation.
“The movement has evolved past what it used to be. It is now empowering the people all over the country. We have an app that tells you what President Bola Tinubu is doing,” Taiwo said.
He urged members to support all APC candidates, including the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat.
The Deputy Zonal Coordinator for Lagos West, Oseni Ahmed, described the appointments as a responsibility to reciprocate what Tinubu had done for the country, while predicting a stronger performance for the President in his second term.
The Chairman of Agege Local Government, AbdulGaniyu Obasa; Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, David Odunmbaku; and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industry, Training and Development, Adamson Ayinde, also urged the executives to focus on grassroots mobilisation.
In his closing remarks, the Lagos State Coordinator of the movement, Sesi Whighan, called on members to take its message into their communities and work for the election of APC candidates.
