Abbey Bank Plc, formerly Abbey Mortgage Bank Plc, has set a fourth-quarter date to commence commercial operations nationwide, with its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Mobolaji Adewumi, declaring that “as we prepare for the commencement of commercial banking operations in this fourth quarter of 2026, our focus remains on delivering a seamless transition and strengthening our capabilities.”
The bank disclosed that the move is aimed at repositioning for growth and wider market reach following approval by the Central Bank of Nigeria to operate as a regional commercial bank.
Ahead of the launch, the institution is strengthening its institutional capabilities, refreshing its brand identity, enhancing its digital infrastructure, and preparing to serve a broader range of customers across retail, business, and corporate banking.
The transition, according to the bank in a statement on Tuesday, represents more than a change in licence or name. “It signals Abbey’s ambition to expand access to financial services, deepen customer relationships, and create greater opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities. It also builds on years of experience in mortgage banking and real estate finance, providing a foundation for the bank to broaden its capabilities and pursue new opportunities within Nigeria’s financial services sector,” the bank said.
Commenting on the bank’s transformation, Adewumi said, “The year 2026 represents a defining moment in the history of Abbey. Our approval to transition to commercial banking is a testament to the work invested in building this institution and the confidence placed in us by our regulators, shareholders, customers, and employees. We are building on more than three decades of experience, particularly in mortgage banking and real estate finance, while preparing to serve a broader range of financial needs. Our ambition is to make banking more accessible, more responsive, and more relevant to the aspirations of individuals, families, and businesses.”

He added, “Our next chapter is about creating more possibilities for the people and businesses we serve.”
Established over three decades ago, Abbey Mortgage Bank built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s premier primary mortgage institutions, playing a key role in home ownership, estate development, and property finance. Over the years, the financial landscape has evolved rapidly, driven by shifting economic conditions, regulatory reforms by the Central Bank of Nigeria, and an increasing demand for comprehensive banking services.
To adapt to these market dynamics and maximise shareholder value, Abbey initiated a strategic overhaul, transitioning from a niche mortgage provider into a full-fledged commercial banking institution capable of capturing a larger share of the nation’s financial services market.
Abbey’s transformation is underpinned by financial resilience, sustainable growth, and efforts to strengthen its capital base. The move comes at a time when the Central Bank of Nigeria has mandated higher capital requirements across the banking sector to fortify financial institutions against economic headwinds.
