The South-East CEN police have registered an FIR over a suspected website defacement attack targeting Karnataka’s Maralu Mitra portal for booking loads of sand, hosted on sand.karnataka.gov.in, following an alert from the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC).
According to the complaint, the NCIIPC issued a warning about a possible website defacement attack targeting the portal. The platform plays a key role in managing sand-related operations and the associated public and official data.
In view of the alert, the government has expressed concern over the possibility of unauthorised access to, misuse, disclosure or alteration of the public and official data maintained on the software.
The police have registered a case under Sections 43, 66 and 66(C) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The complaint raises concerns about a potential cyberattack. However, police said the available information does not establish whether any data was actually accessed, altered or leaked.
