The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will develop 36 new parks at an estimated cost of ₹34.45 crore and 11 new playgrounds at ₹9.52 crore in the first phase of the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM), 2026–2031.

The GCC is currently undertaking the tendering process for the parks and playgrounds. Work will begin after the process is completed, Commissioner G.S. Sameeran said.

The projects are intended to increase Chennai’s green cover and improve access to recreational spaces. The proposed parks will be spread across nine zones — Alandur, Manali, Tondiarpet, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Perungudi and Sholinganallur.

The identified locations include the Kathipara–airport entrance and the VIP arrival area at the airport in Alandur; the stretch beneath the 2B bridge on Manali Road in Tondiarpet; EVR Periyar Salai and Nelson Manickam Salai in Anna Nagar; and Peters Road in Teynampet. Several parks are also proposed in Kannagi Nagar, Adityaram Nagar and Jawahar Nagar in Sholinganallur.

The 11 playgrounds will be developed in Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, Kodambakkam and Sholinganallur zones. The identified locations include Amirthammal Nagar and Ashoka Street in Madhavaram, Sharma Nagar and areas near Dr. Ambedkar Arts College in Tondiarpet, and R.V. Nagar in Kodambakkam.

The projects are part of the State-wide five-year CMIUDM, which has an overall outlay of ₹1.5 lakh crore. The mission includes ₹2,000 crore for urban greening, recreation and open-space development across Tamil Nadu.
