The BJP’s Kalaburagi district unit will stage a protest in front of the Central Bus Stand here on Friday against the increase in milk prices and KSRTC bus fares, the former MLA Dattatreya Patil Revoor has said.
Addressing a joint press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Revoor and BJP State spokesperson Sudha Halkai accused the Congress government of burdening the public with successive price hikes while projecting the guarantee schemes as a welfare measure.
Describing these price increases as a means of shifting the financial burden of the guarantee schemes onto the public, Mr. Revoor said that the Congress government is exploiting common people through repeated hikes in the prices of essential commodities and services.
The bus fare increase will particularly affect daily commuters, low-income families and migrant workers returning to their native places for the festival, adding to their travel expenses during the festive season, he said.
Instead of passing the additional expenditure of transport corporations onto passengers, the Congress government should provide budgetary support, Mr. Revoor said.
Similarly, the proposed subsidy for the dairy sector should be extended rather than increasing milk prices and burdening consumers, he added.
Turning to farmers concerns, he accused the Congress government of failing to provide adequate relief to drought-hit farmers and getting pending crop insurance claims released.
With sugarcane ready for harvest, the delay in commencing crushing operations is a matter of concern, he said and demanded a remunerative price for the crop.
Mr. Revoor also said that the State’s financial position has deteriorated under the Congress government, with development taking a back seat amid rising corruption and inflation.
Raising concerns over the drinking water shortage in urban and rural areas of the district, he accused the Kalaburagi City Corporation of failing to ensure adequate supply through tankers.
White Paper
Dr. Halkai accused the Congress government of using the guarantee schemes for political gain while shifting their financial burden onto the public through higher taxes and repeated price increases.
Questioning the implementation of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, she demanded a White Paper on pending payments and greater transparency in the government’s finances.
The BJP leaders demanded the immediate withdrawal of the milk price and bus fare hikes and threatened to intensify protests across the State if the Congress government failed to reconsider its decisions.
Mr. Revoor appealed to party leaders and workers to participate in Friday’s demonstration.
