Sir, – In his column this week, Fintan O’Toole points out that most of the supports for Ukrainian refugees in Ireland are now being withdrawn (“State has gone cold on the Ukrainians it once heralded,” October 27th). I would add that the Government’s current policy on relocating disabled Ukrainians shows a complete lack of understanding and compassion for this vulnerable group.
In some cases, Ukrainian refugees with a disability are now being moved from the appropriate and much appreciated accommodation they have occupied for the past four years to unsuitable accommodation far from their GP practices, the hospitals they attend, public transport and the communities where they have settled and made friends.
This policy is creating further difficulty and distress for people who already face severe challenges in their lives.
Surely Ireland can do better than this for the Ukrainian refugees who still need our help and, indeed, who need it the most. – Yours, etc,
Fiona Galway,
