A 49-year-old man has been charged in connection with an incident in which a man died, and another was injured following a stabbing at an International Protection Accommodation Services centre in Co Kerry.

Ismail Mustaph Hussan was brought before a special sitting of Killarney District Court this evening.

He is charged with the murder of Muhudin Osman Suleyman at Ballymullen Barracks yesterday morning contrary to common law.

The Somali national is further charged with Section 3 assault causing harm to Hassan Hussein Abedi at the same location.

Detective Sergeant James Hurley of Tralee Garda Station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him.

There was no application for bail as the District Court does not have the jurisdiction to grant bail on a murder charge.

Judge Joanne Carroll remanded the accused in custody to appear before Tralee District Court on Wednesday via video-link.

Solicitor Nuala Liston told the court that her client would require medical attention.

Judge Carroll said she would request that the accused is medically assessed at the prison to which he is remanded.

Ismail Mustaph Hussan had the proceedings of this evening's brief court appearance translated to him through a Somali interpreter.
