The Wine Bar at The International
Contemporary$$
More than just a place to drink.
“Are you even a wine bar if you’re not pouring an obnoxious amount of Ganevat?” asks the 22-page drinks list at The Wine Bar at The International. Sommelier Jacqueline Turner has clearly had fun turning this ambitious list into something lively and digestible, with sections devoted to light, flirtatious whites, euphoric champagnes and powerful, outrageous reds, along with a weekly slot for a guest winemaker.
The food menu is just as robust, with charred, chewy pizza smeared with ’nduja and whipped ricotta, calamarata with calamari so tender you can’t tell where the pasta ends and the squid begins, and a smoked cod sandwich that’s all about the squish of soft bread and the crunch of a golden crumb, finished with the fruity tang of a coronation curry sauce.
It’s all made for sharing, as is the seating, with circular sunshine-yellow lounges spread across the concrete floor. If you ever needed an excuse to open a bottle of Jean-François Ganevat gamay, this is it.
Good to know: The value is even better at lunchtime between noon and 3pm, with $15 pizza, $25 pasta and $10 wine specials.
