R by Raita Noda

Japanese$$$$

Unflinching creativity from a dynamic father-son team.

The bar at R By Raita Noda tells you everything you need to know about the experience you will be treated to tonight. Gone is the traditional hinoki cypress favoured by high-end omakase joints in Japan, replaced instead with a black-resin counter splashed with celestial blue swirls, lit by lamps like molten glass, under a pressed-metal ceiling that looks like rain falling from above.

It’s bold and inventive, much like the set menu of 10 dishes presented in a single sitting each night by Raita Noda and his son, Momotaro. Discard everything you know about Japanese tradition here and instead enjoy parmesan chawanmushi with spherified olive juice, West Australian octopus dressed with sesame oil and bush lime, and John Dory under pistachio ice-cream and smoke.

Not every dish hits the mark, but the wild creativity here deserves applause, the work of two visionaries determined to take traditional cuisine into the stratosphere.

Good to know: R By Raita Noda requires a minimum drinks spend of $60 per person on Fridays and Saturdays.
