WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson will be stepping aside from Republican Party leadership after the GOP’s wipeout in the midterm election, declining to seek support to stay on as House minority leader in the new Congress, according to two people familiar with his decision Wednesday.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, have already jumped in to run for Johnson’s place.

As speaker, the New York Democrat would be second in the presidential line of succession, after the vice president. He has vowed to focus on affordability and holding the administration accountable.
