A magnitude-7 earthquake has struck China's south-western region of Tibet, killing 16 people and injuring 32 others, state news agency Xinhua has reported.

The powerful earthquake has injured 32 others so far, local medics report.

It was the biggest earthquake in the region in the last five years, China's national broadcaster CCTV said.

Residents fled their homes as smaller tremors followed the earthquake, the strongest to hit China since January 2024.
