Spanish train services between Madrid and Seville were suspended on Wednesday morning after an accident involving two trains which resulted in an unspecified number of injuries.

"There has been a collision between two trains [and] there are injured people," said Manuel Galans, mayor of the town of Urda in the province of Toledo where the incident took place just after 9 a.m. local time.

"Traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed rail line has been suspended following a rear-end collision between two trains," confirmed rail operator Adif in a post on social media.

Spanish newspaper El Pais cited witnesses describing numerous injuries and arrival of emergency medical teams at the scene.

Two of the train carriages involved reportedly left the tracks between Urda and Yebenes and tumbled down an embankment, the report added.

It's not the first train crash in Spain this year. In January, 45 people died when a train jumped the track and hit an oncoming train.
