Nicolas Cage is sharing an update on his living situation after a massive sinkhole damaged his $10.5 million beachfront mansion in Malibu in September, leading him to stay in hotels.
The sinkhole opened on Sept. 8, reaching about 25 feet deep and measuring 30 by 60 feet. The collapse swallowed part of the driveway and damaged the deck of the Spider-Noir actor’s property. The damage also prompted the evacuation of 31 properties in the area, including Cage’s, after the collapse restricted access for residents and emergency responders.
On Saturday, Cage attended a panel at Los Angeles Comic Con, where he was asked about his Halloween plans. “I’m currently a little bit homeless,” he said. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels, so I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.”
The collapse also prompted concerns about a gas leak in the area. Malibu officials declared a local emergency, warning that conditions could worsen because of high tides and rain associated with Hurricane Marie. No injuries were reported.
Despite the unusual Halloween circumstances, Cage still planned to celebrate the holiday with his 4-year-old daughter, August Francesca Coppola Cage.
“I’ll take my daughter out trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica, but I am going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for worst director at the Razzies — called The Shining,” Cage said at L.A. Comic Con. “He directed the hell out of that movie. I’m going to watch that tonight. After I put my daughter to bed, I’m going to put on The Shining.”
