In mid-October, Netflix laid off around 1,000 employees, or 6 percent of its workforce, in the streaming giant’s largest job cuts since 2022. Now, the hit to the company’s U.K. business is starting to become clearer.
Anna Mallett, who served as Netflix’s vp, physical production for the U.K. and local-language content production across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), is among the people who were affected in the company’s London office, THR has confirmed a report by Broadcast. It is understood that the staff cut hit about 2 percent to 3 percent of the London office employees. The office, which has several hundred staff members, also saw people working in communications and other roles exit.
Netflix had hired Mallett in November 2020. She worked across TV series and films in the U.K. and EMEA, including such hits as Baby Reindeer, Adolescence and latter seasons of Spanish hit Money Heist.
The executive previously served as CEO of ITN after working as group chief operating officer and managing director, production at BBC Studios.
Among the highest-profile victims of the Netflix cuts in the U.S. were chief content officer Bela Bajaria and film boss Dan Lin. Bajaria was replaced by Hollywood veteran Peter Rice.
“The business and the business flywheel are working. There’s no need for a fundamental shift in strategy,” Netflix co-CEO Sarandos said on a recent call to discuss third-quarter earnings. “We do need better execution in the U.S. Our content around the world is largely working. … The U.S. is also working. It’s just not growing as fast as it could or as fast as we’d like.”
And he added: “We had some really solid doubles and triples this year. But the other territories count on some of those titles being home runs so they’ll travel around the world. So we’re really focusing on that execution.”
