EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has snapped up AWOL, an hour-long dramedy series package from Craig Rowin, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, in a competitive situation, Deadline has learned.
Specifics as to the deal weren’t disclosed. There’s also no word yet on the plot of the series, which is now in development at Netflix, though we know it’ll be scripted by Rowin, a writer with credits like Apple’s The Off Weeks and The Big Door Prize. Daley and Goldstein will exec produce via their GoldDay Productions banner, whose Sara Smith is overseeing.
An Emmy-nominated and WGA Award-winning writer, Rowin was most recently a Co-EP on Apple’s upcoming hourlong series The Off Weeks starring Ben Stiller and Jessica Chastain. The divorce miniseries hails from creators Alissa Nutting and Dean Bakopoulos. Previously, Rowin was a Co-EP on the streamer’s Chris O’Dowd comedy The Big Door Prize, which adapted the novel by M. O. Walsh. Other past credits include HBO Max’s Search Party, ABC’s Bless This Mess, Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, and Hulu’s Triumph the Insult Comic Dog election specials.
Rowin is repped by Independent Artist Group, Artists First, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
Goldstein and Daley are the pair of longtime filmmaking partners who are currently developing the next Star Trek film from Paramount; they’ll direct and produce from their own script. The duo are coming off of Mayday, a Cold War buddy action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, which released on Apple TV in September, becoming their biggest-ever film debut. Most recently, they attached to direct Renegades, a Sony action-thriller based on a short story by Will Simmons, who is adapting, as we first reported.
Daley and Goldstein previously helmed the critically acclaimed Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves for Paramount, New Line’s hit comedy Game Night, and wrote and directed New Line’s Vacation reboot. They’ve also written on Spider-Man: Homecoming, Vacation Friends, Horrible Bosses and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.
The multi-hyphenates are repped by WME, Fourth Wall Management, and Hansen Jacobson Teller.
