EXCLUSIVE: STUDIO: We hear that Michael Montemayor is writing the first draft of a live-action Medusa movie for Disney which Seven Bucks is developing under their deal with the Mouse House.
Medusa is the famed snake-haired woman, one of three Gorgons in Greek mythology who would turn any person to stone who looked upon her. Medusa and her Gorgon sisters Euryale and Stheno were daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. Medusa was beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus, who used her head as a weapon. He ultimately gave the head to goddess Athena to place on her shield. For anyone who watched the Clash of the Titans movies, they know that Medusa stole the show as the perfect foe to Perseus more than the Kraken or Calibos.
Details of Montemayor’s take of Medusa are being kept under wraps.
Note, this is not a starring vehicle for Dwayne Johnson at this point in time (but how cool would it be if it ultimately is?). Johnson is producing with his Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia with Melissa Ford overseeing. Matt Smith is also producing under Electro Corduroy Entertainment.
Montemayor recently wrote on the highly anticipated live-action Tangled feature for Disney Live Action, with Michael Gracey directing; that pic hitting theaters on March 31, 2028. Montemayor is very in demand at Disney Live Action with his other upcoming screening being Stepsisters, which is an original live-action Cinderella spin-off, with Akiva Schaffer attached to direct and produce. Montemayor also sold an original romantic comedy, Court Date, to Netflix with Berlanti/Schechter Films producing. The writer is repped by Kaplan/Perrone, CAA, and Kim Stenton at Myman, Greenspan, Fineman, Fox, Rosenberg & Light.
Seven Bucks has the final Jumanji: Open World coming up from Sony and starring Johnson on Christmas Day. Johnson and Seven Bucks’ previous two Jumanji movies grossed $1.76 billion at the global box office. Johnson and Seven Bucks are also reteam with Smashing Machine filmmaker Benny Safdie on the Lizard Music for Amazon MGM Studios. Johnson and Seven Bucks previous collaboration with Disney was Jungle Cruise.
Smith is a producer and co-founder of Highway 10, whose first two films — The Saviors (Adam Scott, Danielle Deadwyler) and Wishful Thinking (Lewis Pullman, Maya Hawke) — premiered at SXSW 2026 and were acquired for global theatrical release in 2027. He also founded Electro Corduroy Entertainment and is known for executive producing Disney’s $1.25 billion grossing Maleficent franchise starring Angelina Jolie. His recent credits include the 2025 action-comedy Code 3 (Lil Rel Howery, Rainn Wilson) MGM’s musical remake of Valley Girl and Netflix’s Rim of the World, directed by McG. On the independent side, he produced Joe Lynch’s Mayhem (Steven Yeun and Samara Weaving) along with two Richard Bates Jr. horror films that premiered at Sundance and SXSW. Before launching his own ventures, he was an executive for Circle of Confusion, Platinum Dunes, and Weed Road Pictures.
