Lionsgate said today it’s greenlit its highly anticipated upcoming John Wick animated film, with Keanu Reeves inking a deal to reprise his signature role as the iconic assassin in the billion-dollar franchise.

The animated feature will be produced by the John Wick producing team of Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, 87Eleven Entertainment’s Chad Stahelski, and Keanu Reeves, and will be joined in the new feature by Point Grey.

Emmy-winning producer, writer, and director Shannon Tindle (Ultraman: Rising, Kubo and the Two Strings) will direct. The project is written by Ryan & Kaz Firpo.

As previously announced, the animated film will go back in time to tell the story of John Wick before the first film, as he completes the Impossible Task in order to free himself from his obligation to the High Table and earn the right to be with the love of his life, Helen.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer noted today in comments after quarterly earnings that the film was in preproduction.
