Kherson, Ukraine – After passing through checkpoints manned by soldiers, and quickly stopping to take photos in front of the entrance to Kherson, Yuliia Mayfeld and her children had finally arrived: “Home!”
There were gasps of joy. The 39-year-old and her family had not been back to their residence in southern Ukraine for almost five years, having fled to the nearby region of Odesa amid intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.
Taking advantage of a weeklong humanitarian truce in the region, brokered by U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and scheduled to end on Sunday evening, they were able to come back: if only for a little while, and to revisit old memories.
