Kay Cannon Helming Rom-Com ‘Single At The Wedding’ For New Line

EXCLUSIVE: Kay Cannon has found her next studio directing vehicle: Single at the Wedding, a romantic comedy that she’ll re-write and direct for New Line Cinema.

The title tells you what to expect here: the film follows Allie, who as the last single one of her friends, is determined to find love at her best friend’s wedding.

Cannon will team with Eben Russell, creator of the Freeform comedy series Alone Together, for a new pass on the original screenplay by Anne Sundell, which was originally developed by Sundell and Alex Richanbach.

Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum, veterans of such recent rom-coms as the Sony hit Anyone But You and Netflix’s A Family Affair, are producing. Cannon will exec produce alongside Richanbach.

No stranger to the rom-com herself, Cannon is coming off One Attempt Remaining, starring Jennifer Garner and John Cena — another film that she co-wrote and directed. That title, from 21 Laps and Linden Entertainment, has not yet locked in a release date.

An Emmy nominee, Cannon is otherwise known for creating the a capella comedy franchise Pitch Perfect and for her feature directorial debut, the hit Uni comedy Blockers, also starring Cena. Following her work there, she went on to write and direct a jukebox musical take on Cinderella, starring singer-songwriter Camila Cabello, for Columbia Pictures/Amazon. On the television side, her credits include six seasons of 30 Rock, for which she earned multiple Emmy nominations, Writers Guild Awards and a Peabody Award, along with Fox’s New Girl, where she was Co-EP, and Netflix’s Girlboss, which she created.

New Line has a long history of producing comedic crowd-pleasers, from the Friday, Austin Powers and Rush Hour film franchises to such hit one-offs as Wedding Crashers, The Wedding Singer, and Elf.

Single at the Wedding will mark Cannon’s first outing with the studio, which yesterday announced One of Them Days‘ Lawrence Lamont as directing the next installment in their Friday franchise with Ice Cube. She is repped by by WME and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
