John Carpenter getting a major honor from the ACE Eddie Awards is a Thing.
In a move perfectly timed for Halloween week, American Cinema Editors said Wednesday that celebrated horrormeister will receive its 2027 ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year award.
The filmmaker behind the original Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, They Live and so many others including Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. will be feted during the 77th annual ACE Eddie Awards on February 7 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Comic and actor Patton Oswalt is back to host the ceremony.
“John Carpenter makes movies that get under your skin and stay there,” ACE President Sabrina Plisco said. “Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York — these films have scared, thrilled and shaped generations of audiences and filmmakers alike. Few directors understand rhythm, tension and restraint the way he does, and he has always trusted his editors to help him find it. That collaboration is exactly what this honor celebrates.”

The honorary society also revealed that Bonnie Koehler and Christopher Nelson will receive Career Achievement awards during the show, which celebrates outstanding editing in film, television, documentaries, shorts and digital content.
“Bonnie Koehler and Chris Nelson are editors other editors look up to,” Plisco said. “Bonnie went from American Zoetrope to an Emmy nomination for L.A. Law and an ACE Eddie nomination for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, television’s longest-running primetime drama. Chris cut the finale of Lost, one of the most watched and debated hours in television history, and his work on Six Feet Under and Mad Men helped define prestige television. Both have given generously to our community.”

Nominees in 14 categories for the 2027 ACE Eddie Awards will be revealed on Thursday, January 14. Back in February, eventual Best Picture Oscar winner One Battle After Another and its 2026 awards season rival Sinners took the top film prizes at the 76th Eddie Awards. Andy Jurgensen also won the Academy Award for Best Editing. Toon juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters won the animation prize en route to the Best Animated Feature Oscar.
