EXCLUSIVE: U.S. distributor-producer Angel is behind original comedy series Shelf Life from the producers of Biblical drama The Promised Land.

Created, written and directed by Brian Cates and produced by Milk & Honey Studios, the comedy is currently in production and is set to premiere exclusively on the Angel platform in 2027. Cast includes Jim O’Heir (Parks and Recreation) and Zachary Levi (Shazam!).

The synopsis reads: “What happens when a pastor loses his pulpit and finds himself behind a grocery store checkout? In Shelf Life, a former pastor who, after being kicked out of the pulpit, lands a job at a local grocery store, only to realize his calling to care for others can’t be shelved when he’s surrounded by quirky coworkers juggling life’s little dramas.”

Also starring are Wesam Keesh (The Morning Show), Donna Biscoe (The Fundamentals of Caring), Tommy Woodard (The Forge), Jonathan Charles (Infernal), Leilany Celeste (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Jazelle Villanueva (Valets), and Brittany Visser (Puppet Seizure). Richie Johns produces.

“I’ve spent twenty years working in the faith and comedy space, and my belief hasn’t changed: if you make people laugh, you can make people listen,” said creator, writer and director Brian Cates. “That’s the heart of what we’re doing with Shelf Life. Humor has a way of lowering our defenses and creating space for conversations about the things that actually matter. We wanted to make a show that families could watch together — something genuinely funny, but also honest about life, faith, failure and second chances. At the end of the day, the message is simple: we all reach moments when we think we’ve passed our expiration date. But God isn’t finished with us yet.”

“Following the success of The Promised Land, we were looking for a story that could make people laugh while still giving them something to think about,” said producer Richie Johns. “Shelf Life does exactly that. It’s unexpected, warm, funny and filled with characters you’ll want to spend time with. We’re thrilled to be bringing this world to life with such an incredible cast and to share it with Angel’s community and Angel Guild members.”

“When I first read the scripts, I knew there was something special here,” added Jim O’Heir. “There’s so much humor and heart woven into these characters and their stories. I’ve always loved ensemble comedies, and this cast is incredibly talented. What I love about Shelf Life is that you come for the laughs, but you end up genuinely caring about these people. I think audiences are going to have a lot of fun with this one.”

“Shelf Life offers a fresh, unexpected spin on the comedy series, blending sharp humor with an authenticity that makes its characters and stories feel both surprising and deeply relatable,” commented Zachary Levi. “I’m thrilled to be part of a show that brings together such a compelling mix of characters and finds the humor, heart, and humanity in their stories—creating something audiences can see themselves in, connect with, and keep coming back for.”

“The best entertainment does more than make us laugh—it brings us together, lifts our spirits, and reminds us of what matters most. Shelf Life does just that, blending humor and heart in a way that leaves audiences feeling good,” noted Jordan Harmon, co-founder and President of Angel.
