It is almost impossible to overestimate the cynicism and opportunism of the government of Russia.
President Vladimir Putin will do anything he can to maximize his leverage in international negotiations. That is the lens through which the world should interpret the arrest of a Japanese journalist on charges of espionage. This is hostage taking to gain leverage over Japan. It should be condemned without qualification and the journalist must be released immediately.
Last month, Russian security services announced the arrest of Yuki Imai, a journalist at the Hokkaido Shimbun’s bureau in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on Sakhalin Island in eastern Russia on charges of espionage. According to the Federal Security Service, or FSB, Imai had been “collecting and storing information related to the country’s defense capabilities in order to transmit it on behalf of the national intelligence services for use against the security of the Russian Federation.” More specifically, he was accused of collecting data on the number of people from the Kuril Islands who were taking part in the war in Ukraine. The FSB also said that he was arrested “the day before his departure” from Russian territory.
In a time of both misinformation and too much information,
quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
