PATTAYA - Immigration police say a Chinese man wanted in his home country for running a major gambling business had his biological daughter registered as the child of a Thai man to obtain Thai nationality.
Li Jianlu, 37, was arrested at his house in Pattaya on Tuesday, according to police commissioner Pol Lt Gen Noppasilp Poonsawat, the Immigration Police commissioner. He was wanted under an Interpol Red Notice for allegedly operating a casino that caused damage equivalent to 1.5 billion baht to the Chinese government.
Police also found that Mr Li was the biological father of a two-year-old girl registered with a Thai name. The girl qualified for Thai citizenship after her Chinese mother, Yourui Wang, informed authorities that she had a 22-year-old Thai husband who was the father.
Ms Wang used the information to have her visa in Thailand extended, Pol Lt Gen Noppasilp said.
Police will revoke the Thai citizenship of the child and look into who else was responsible for the fake registration of Thai men as fathers of Chinese children, he said.
The government earlier this year tightened birth registration procedures nationwide after investigations uncovered schemes in numerous provinces that enabled hundreds of Chinese children to obtain Thai nationality with fraudulent documents.
