SEBERANG PERAI, Nov 8 — Healthcare workers were seen holding umbrellas indoors at Seberang Jaya Hospital last night as rainwater poured through leaking ceilings and spread across flooded corridors, in video footage that has since gone viral.

Penang Health director Dr Zulhizzam Abdullah confirmed that heavy rain and strong winds sent water seeping into several parts of the hospital, the New Straits Times reported today.

“Most affected areas involved the hospital’s older building blocks, though several newer buildings were also impacted,” he was quoted as saying.

“This was an unforeseen incident due to torrential rain, gale-force winds and massive runoff.

“However, no patients were affected, and no adverse incidents were reported,” he added.

Dr Zulhizzam said the hospital’s engineering and maintenance management department had moved to address the situation immediately.

Malaysia is currently in the north-east monsoon season, which is expected to continue until March next year.
