Buena Vista Social Club, the Tony-winning musical inspired by the legendary Cuban artists that give the show its title, will close on Broadway January 17, 2027, after a 96-week, 767-performance run.

Producers announced the closing date today. Although the production has not recouped its reported $17 million investment, they say it is “on schedule” to do so.

The musical, which began previews on February 21, 2025, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, opened March 19 of that year to good reviews and consistently strong box office, features a book by Marco Ramirez, direction by Saheem Ali, choreography by Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck, creative consultation by David Yazbek, music supervision by Dean Sharenow and orchestrations, arrangements and music direction by Marco Paguia.

“From our very first trip to Cuba to meet the musicians who created this masterpiece, I knew we had something truly special, something to cherish,” said lead producer Orin Wolf in a statement. “I am in awe of what Marco R., Saheem, Patricia, Justin, David, Marco P. and Dean have created artistically, bringing this extraordinary music to life on stage and presenting the first Broadway score performed exclusively in Spanish.

“I am deeply grateful for the time we’ve had on Broadway – and the speed with which the team has created three more productions,” he continued. “We are thrilled the Broadway production is on schedule to recoup as we look ahead to an exciting tour, special engagements in Mexico and Puerto Rico, the film and so much more.”

A West End production in London is scheduled to begin in 2027. As of now, there are four productions of the musical up and running: On Broadway; on a North American tour (currently at the Music Hall at Fair Park in Dallas, Texas; at the Antonio Paoli Festival Hall at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Puerto Rico, and at the Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City.

All feature the first Broadway score performed solely in Spanish. Producers say the musical has attracted the highest number of Hispanic ticket buyers in the history of The Shubert Organization.

The Broadway production scored five Tony Awards including Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical (Natalie Venetia Belcon); Best Choreography; Best Orchestrations; Best Sound Design of a Musical; and a Special Tony Award for the 10-piece center-stage band. The cast album won the Grammy Award. (Belcon is returning to the production November 30, as is Ashley De La Rosa on November 16).

While the production has remained one of the stronger Broadway shows, the weekly tallies have dimmed considerably since its peak performances last year, when the musical often grossed well above the $1 million mark. The most recent available figure, for the week ending November 1, was $678,878, with attendance at 89% of the Schoenfeld’s capacity.

The current BVSC cast oincludes Gina Torres, Rick Negron, Mel Semé, Jainardo Batista Sterling, Isa Antonetti, Da’Von T. Moody, Wesley Wray, Jesús Pupo, Renesito Avich, Tanairi Sade Vazquez, Chris Myers, José “Candelita” Iglesias, Bernie Williams (Guitar), Angélica Beliard, Joshua Gonzalez, Jacob Guzman, Ian Lassiter, Héctor Juan Maisonet, Ilda Mason, Marielys Molina, Eric Parra, Sophia Ramos, Clinton Roane and Anthony Santos.

Inspired by true events, the musical tells the inspiring story of the legendary Afro-Cuban Havana band who reunited to record the 1997 Grammy Award-winning album Buena Vista Social Club.

BVSC is produced on Broadway by Orin Wolf, John Styles, Barbara Broccoli, Atlantic Theater Company, Luis Miranda, LaChanze and John Leguizamo, with Executive Producer Allan Williams.
