CBS’ Beyond the Gates triumphed at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in its first year of eligibility, with big wins in the Outstanding Lead Actor and Emerging Actress categories.
In all, Beyond the Gates also won four Emmys at the ceremony that was streamed on YouTube. The sudser penned by Michele Val Jean debuted on CBS on February 24, 2025, which meant it missed the cutoff window for the 2025 awards.
But the sudser, which is set in one of the most affluent Black counties in the United States, made up for lost time Friday as stars Tamara Tunie and Ambyr Michelle received first time Daytime Emmys for their roles as Anita Dupree and Eva Thomas, respectively.
“This is the best welcome back to daytime ever,” said Tunie after accepting the Emmy. “There is a host of Black actresses who paved the way for me and I feel them as I stand here tonight, beginning with Cecily Tyson, the first Black woman to appear on the daytime TV show The Guiding Light.”
The CBS sudser also won Emmys for lighting direction and hairstyling and makeup.
Beyond the Gates, the first daytime soap opera to feature a primarily Black cast since Generations in 1989, has been renewed through the 2027-28 season. The debut project is from the CBS Studios/NAACP Venture.
