Fire and Emergency staff battling a scrub blaze on Defence Force training land at Waiouru are being gradually pulled back.
The blaze in the central North Island broke out last weekend, and 60 percent of it has been contained.
However, it is expected to take time to tackle the remaining 40 percent because the fire is deep-seated with hard-to-access hot spots.
Sixty-six firefighters are currently working on the ground, supported by a helicopter, four heavy machines and six fire trucks.
The force said live-fire training was essential to maintain the New Zealand Army's combat capability, but the activity could result in fires.
