Rescuers had to use ropes to save a teenage boy who became stranded on rocks while fishing when the tide came in in East Auckland.

Police Senior Sergeant Garry Larsen said the teen, who was at Musick Point near Bucklands Beach, called 111 just before 8pm on Wednesday.

"He realised the tide was coming in quickly, putting him in a tricky spot with the terrain meaning he could not climb out."

Police Search and Rescue high ropes team were deployed and they were able to get the boy to safety, he said.

He said the incident was a timely reminder to anyone heading out on the water or going fishing to be prepared and pay close attention to tides and conditions.

"Police advice for the warmer months is to always know your limits and have a few modes of communication if something goes wrong.

"Always tell someone where you're going, and when you're due back."
