The search for a missing kayaker off the coast of Mill Bay in West Auckland is resuming.

Inspector Simon Walker said Tuesday's search efforts would focus on aerial and coastline areas.

Emergency services were called at about 3pm on Monday after a man who had been kayaking alone failed to return to shore.

He was last seen on a blue and white kayak about one kilometre offshore between Mill Bay and Manukau Heads.

Mill Bay is under 1km from Cornwallis Beach.

Police said an extensive search operation was conducted with the Eagle helicopter and Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter dispatched immediately.

They searched until dark but the man was not found.

"Police continue to ask the public to contact us on 111 if you see anything unusual in the water."
