Northland police are appealing for information about a mysterious hit-and-run in Whangārei on Wednesday night.
Police say a car was seen hitting a pedestrian on the footpath of Ōtaika Road, one of the city's busiest roads, about 10.45pm.
Both the pedestrian and the driver left the scene before police arrived, but the car was left behind.
Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer said police wanted to speak with the pedestrian to ensure they were OK and they wanted the driver to come forward to assist enquiries.
The car involved was a grey Mitsubishi Outlander, registration HDG380. It was not being driven by its registered owner at the time.
The vehicle was now undergoing a forensic examination.
Pilmer wanted to hear from anyone who saw the Outlander in the Ōtaika Road area before the incident or anyone with relevant dashcam footage from about that time.
Information could be passed to police at www.police.govt.nz/use-105 or by calling 105, quoting file number 261105/1328.
