A manhunt is underway for two people following reports of a robbery and car-jacking north of Wellington.

Police responded to a report of a robbery on Ararino Street in Upper Hutt around 5.30pm on Tuesday.

They say three offenders, reportedly carrying an axe and a hammer, took a cash till before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

The trio abandoned the vehicle and stole another car, but attempts to stop it failed, police said.

The driver lost control and crashed on State Highway 1 between Porirua and Tawa.

Police said no serious injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved.

The southbound lane near the Kenepuru off-ramp is currently closed.

Police said the alleged driver has been taken into custody, with work to find the two passengers ongoing.
